Decoding Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

What is SAF?

SAF is an eco-friendly alternative to normal jet fuel; it decreases CO2 emissions. It's produced from renewable sources, so it's our ticket to greener skies.

Environmental Benefits

The Reduced Carbon Footprint: There are far fewer emissions of CO2 with SAF technology than there are with traditional fuels.
Cleaner Air: The fewer pollutants, the better the air quality around airports.

How is SAF produced?

  • HEFA: hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids; vegetable oils or animal fats are transformed into drop-in SAF.
  • SIP: synthesized iso-paraffinic; non-food biomass is used to synthesize the fuel SAF.
  • PtL: power-to-liquid; renewable electricity in order to be able to get synthetic hydrocarbons.

Airlines’ Role

  • Commitment: Their use should be supported by airlines.
  • Collaboration: Industry-wide is the way forward in taking up SAF.
  • Policy Support: Governments are at liberty to accord them incentives.

Conclusion

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is the term that, very soon, will be sure to be a life-supporting beam on our planet. With more and more investments placed in these by airlines, it's on a sure route to a fresh and sustainable future for aviation. Prepare yourselves! SAF is taking off!!
